Understanding Flood Plains: The Difference Between 100-Year and 500-Year Floods
Hey everyone, with all the recent talk about flooding and natural disasters, I wanted to take a moment to clarify something that may be confusing to some of us - the difference between the 100 year flood plain and the 500 year flood plain. 🤔🏡
Simply put, a 100 year flood plain is an area that has a 1% chance of being flooded in any given year. In contrast, a 500 year flood plain is an area that has a 0.2% chance of being flooded in any given year. 📈🗺️
While the terms "100 year" and "500 year" may suggest that these floods only occur once every 100 or 500 years, that's not quite accurate. In fact, it's possible for a 100 year flood to occur two years in a row, or even more frequently, just as it's possible for a 500 year flood to occur in consecutive years. 🙀😱
So, why does this matter? Well, understanding flood plains and the likelihood of flooding can help inform decisions about where to build homes and businesses, as well as inform emergency response plans. 💡👷♀️👷♂️🚨
I hope this clears up any confusion about the difference between the 100 year and 500 year flood plain. Stay safe, everyone! 🙏👍
